About the Morning Glory

Their flowers open in the morning and close by afternoon, lasting only one day. Some species are invasive - the Japanese morning glory (asagao) has been bred into thousands of ornamental varieties. Ipomoea batatas is the sweet potato, making it a close relative. Some seeds contain LSA (ergine), a naturally occurring psychedelic compound. Charles Darwin studied their climbing behavior extensively. They twine counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. They can grow 3 meters in a single season. Over 1,000 species in the family. Moonflowers (I. alba) are related night-blooming species.
