About the Hyacinth
One of the most fragrant spring flowers - a single stem can perfume an entire room. Greek mythology says it grew from the blood of Hyacinthus, accidentally killed by Apollo. They contain oxalic acid and can cause skin irritation. Over 30 species. The Dutch developed most modern varieties. They are one of the few bulbs that can be forced to bloom indoors in water. Each stem produces 30-40 individual florets. They are related to asparagus. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil. The bulbs are poisonous if ingested.
