Also called Lily of the Nile (though not a lily and not from the Nile). Their name comes from Greek agape (love) and anthos (flower). They produce spherical clusters of 20-100 flowers on tall stems. They are extremely drought tolerant once established. They are invasive in some regions. Over 10 species. They are the most commonly grown South African garden plant worldwide. Their strap-like leaves are evergreen in mild climates. They thrive in poor soil. They are toxic if ingested. The flowers attract bees and butterflies.
