Amaryllis
About the Amaryllis
Popular winter holiday bulbs that can grow 5 cm per day when sprouting. They can be forced to bloom indoors within 6-8 weeks of planting. The bulbs produce flowers before leaves. They are sometimes confused with hippeastrum, which is the genus of most commercially sold amaryllis. A single bulb can produce 3-4 flower stalks with 4-6 flowers each. They are toxic to pets. Native to South Americas tropical regions. The name comes from a Greek shepherdess in Virgils poetry. They can rebloom for decades with proper care. Over 80 species in the family.
