Snowdrop
About the Snowdrop
Often the very first flower of the year, blooming as early as January. They can generate their own heat, melting through snow to bloom. They contain galantamine, used to treat Alzheimers disease. Over 20 species and 2,000 named cultivars. A single snowdrop bulb sold for $2,500 in 2022 (Golden Fleece variety). They are poisonous if eaten. They naturalize slowly into large drifts over decades. They are symbols of hope and the end of winter. They prefer damp, woodland conditions. They are protected in the wild in many countries.
