Used medicinally for over 6,000 years - Achilles allegedly used it to treat soldiers wounds, hence the genus name Achillea. It contains over 120 active chemical compounds. It was found among the medicinal herbs in a 60,000-year-old Neanderthal burial site in Iraq. Chinese divination used yarrow stalks (I Ching). It was a common substitute for hops in beer before the widespread use of hops. It attracts beneficial insects and makes excellent companion plants. Over 100 species. Its deep roots mine nutrients from subsoil. It spreads aggressively via rhizomes. It was once called nosebleed for its ability to induce or stop bleeding.
