Marigold
About the Marigold
Used in Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations - believed to guide spirits home with their vibrant color and strong scent. They produce thiophenes, compounds that repel nematodes and other soil pests, making them excellent companion plants. The Aztecs used them medicinally and in religious ceremonies. They are edible and used as a saffron substitute. Tagetes minuta is cultivated commercially for its essential oil used in perfumery. They attract beneficial insects while repelling pests. Over 50 species. In India, marigold garlands are used extensively in festivals and weddings.
