Chrysanthemum
About the Chrysanthemum
One of the most cultivated flowers in the world, with over 20,000 varieties. The Japanese Imperial familys seal is a 16-petal chrysanthemum. In Japan, there is a Festival of Happiness (Kiku Matsuri) dedicated to them. They were first cultivated in China as a flowering herb in the 15th century BCE. Chrysanthemum tea is popular in East Asia for its purported cooling properties. They contain pyrethrins, natural insecticidal compounds used in organic pest control. They are one of the few flowers that bloom in autumn. In some European countries, they are used exclusively for funerals and graves.
