About the Amaryllis (Red Lion)

One of the most popular holiday bulbs, producing enormous trumpet-shaped red flowers. Each bulb produces 2-3 stems with 4-6 flowers each. They can grow 5 cm per day when sprouting. They are one of the easiest bulbs to force indoors. The bulbs are 80% water by weight. They can rebloom for decades with proper care. They are toxic to pets. Over 80 species exist. The name amaryllis comes from a Greek shepherdess in Virgils poetry. They are native to South America. They need no soil to bloom - just water and pebbles.
