Hibiscus
About the Hibiscus
The national flower of Malaysia, South Korea, and Haiti. Hibiscus tea (karkade) has been consumed for centuries in Egypt and Sudan. It can lower blood pressure - clinical studies show reductions comparable to some medications. The flowers are used to make natural food coloring and hair treatments. Each flower lasts only one day - they open in the morning and wilt by evening. Some varieties change color throughout the day. Over 200 species exist. The hibiscus is the logo of the national airline of Malaysia. They attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
