Fuchsia
About the Fuchsia
Their distinctive dangling two-tone flowers look like tiny ballerinas or earrings. Named after Leonhart Fuchs, a 16th century German botanist. They are pollinated by hummingbirds in their native habitat. Over 110 species with thousands of hybrids. They are popular in hanging baskets. Some species are edible - the berries taste like mild grapes. They are sensitive to heat and prefer cool, moist conditions. The hardy fuchsia (F. magellanica) can survive temperatures to -15 degrees C. They bloom continuously from summer through fall.
