Cosmos
About the Cosmos
Named from the Greek word for ordered universe because of their evenly spaced petals. They are among the easiest flowers to grow from seed, often blooming within 2 months. Chocolate cosmos (C. atrosanguineus) smells genuinely of dark chocolate and has dark burgundy flowers. They attract butterflies and beneficial insects. They reseed freely and naturalize in meadows. Over 30 species. Spanish priests grew them in mission gardens in Mexico, giving them the name cosmos for their orderly arrangement. They make excellent cut flowers lasting 7-10 days.
