About the Columbine

Aquilegia species bear nodding flowers with long backward pointing nectar spurs. The name comes from the Latin for dove, as the flowers were thought to resemble a cluster of doves. The Rocky Mountain columbine became the state flower of Colorado in 1899. Spur length has evolved to match pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds, and hawkmoths. It self seeds and hybridizes freely in gardens. All parts are toxic if eaten.
