Hellebore
About the Hellebore
Also called Christmas rose or Lenten rose because they bloom in mid-winter. They are the first perennials to bloom, often flowering while snow is still on the ground. They are extremely poisonous, containing cardiac glycosides. Ancient Greeks used them to treat paralysis and gout - sometimes fatally. They are deer and rabbit proof due to toxicity. They live for decades and form large clumps. They nod their flowers downward, protecting pollen from rain. Over 20 species. They self-seed freely. Their leathery leaves are evergreen in mild climates.
