Anemone
About the Anemone
Named from Greek anemos (wind) - they are sometimes called windflowers because some species have flowers that open only when the wind blows. In Greek mythology, they sprang from the tears of Aphrodite mourning Adonis. Over 120 species. The wood anemone is an ancient woodland indicator species - its presence suggests the woodland is at least 400 years old. They contain protoanemonin, which is toxic to grazing animals. Japanese anemones bloom in fall when few other flowers do. They spread via underground rhizomes.
