Snapdragon

About the Snapdragon

Named because the flower head resembles a dragon mouth that opens and closes when squeezed laterally. They can produce flowers in almost any color except true blue. They are self-incompatible - they cannot fertilize themselves, requiring cross-pollination. Their seed pods resemble small skulls when dried. They release a strong fragrance at night. They are cool-season flowers that struggle in extreme heat. Over 40 species. The Greek name Antirrhinum means nose-like. They are deer-resistant. In the language of flowers, they represent both deception (closed mouth) and graciousness.
