About the Primrose
One of the first wildflowers of spring in Europe. The name comes from prima rosa (first rose). They have been cultivated since the 1500s. Over 500 species in the genus Primula. Cowslip and oxlip are related wild species. They prefer shady, damp conditions. Evening primrose is unrelated despite the name. They are important nectar sources for early butterflies. They naturalize in lawns and meadows. They hybridize freely, creating diverse colors. They are the county flower of Devon, England.
