Peony (Itoh)
About the Peony (Itoh)
Intersectional hybrids between tree peonies and herbaceous peonies, combining the best of both. They have the large, exotic flowers of tree peonies on plants that die back like herbaceous peonies. Over 100 cultivars. They are among the most expensive perennials - plants often cost $100-300 each. They were first created by Toichi Itoh in 1948. They are vigorous and long-lived. They produce many more flowers per plant than either parent type. They are disease-resistant. They do not need staking. They are the holy grail for peony collectors.
