Calla Lily

About the Calla Lily

Not a true lily but a member of the arum family, in the genus Zantedeschia. The elegant trumpet is a modified leaf called a spathe wrapped around a central spike of tiny flowers. It is popular at both weddings and funerals. Georgia OKeeffe and Diego Rivera both painted it repeatedly. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth. It grows naturally in marshy ground.
