About the Bougainvillea

Named after French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville, who encountered them in Brazil in 1768. Their colorful petals are actually modified leaves called bracts - the true flowers are small and white inside. They are among the most drought-tolerant flowering plants. They can grow 12 meters in a single season. They thrive in poor soil and need minimal water once established. The sap can cause skin rashes in sensitive individuals. Over 300 varieties. They are the national flower of Grenada. Their thorns can be sharp enough to pierce clothing. They bloom most profusely when slightly stressed.
