About the Wisteria

Can live over 100 years and grow to massive sizes - the largest known wisteria in Sierra Madre, California covers 4,000 square meters and weighs 250 tons. They are aggressive climbers that can damage gutters, siding, and even kill trees they grow on. All parts are toxic if ingested, especially seeds. They are members of the pea family - their flowers develop into bean-like pods. They can take 6-8 years from seed before first flowering. Japanese wisteria (W. floribunda) has racemes up to 1 meter long. They can grow 3 meters per year.
