Iris (Bearded, Tall)
About the Iris (Bearded, Tall)
The most popular iris type with thousands of cultivars. They grow from rhizomes placed at soil surface level. Each rhizome blooms once then produces new rhizomes that bloom the following year. Over 60,000 registered cultivars exist. They are among the most drought-tolerant garden plants. They need excellent drainage - they will rot in wet soil. The beard (fuzzy caterpillar-like structure) on the falls attracts and guides pollinators. They are deer and rabbit resistant. They multiply rapidly. They prefer full sun and neutral to alkaline soil.
