About the Pansy
One of the most popular bedding plants worldwide. They are edible and used to garnish salads and desserts. Their face-like markings are caused by dark blotches on the petals. The name comes from French pensee (thought). Over 400 cultivars. They thrive in cool weather and struggle in heat. They can survive light frost and snow. Shakespeare wrote about them in A Midsummer Nights Dream. They are related to violets. They self-seed freely. They are among the easiest annuals to grow from seed. They make excellent container plants.
